How to Apply Peel and Stick Wallpaper: A Step-by-Step Guide

Peel and stick wallpaper has become increasingly popular due to its ease of application and removal. Whether you're a renter looking for a temporary design solution or a homeowner wanting to experiment with patterns, this guide will walk you through the process of applying peel and stick wallpaper.

1. Gather Your Materials

First and foremost, make sure you have:

  • Peel and stick wallpaper
  • Scissors or a utility knife
  • Smoothing tool or squeegee
  • Tape measure
  • Level
  • Pencil
  • Step ladder (if needed)

2. Prepare the Surface

Next, ensure your walls are clean, dry, and smooth. Additionally, remove any outlet covers and switch plates. Then, fill any holes or cracks and sand them smooth. For best results, apply the wallpaper to a primed or painted surface.

3. Measure and Cut

After preparing the surface, measure the height of your wall and cut your first strip, adding an extra 2-3 inches for trimming. If your wallpaper has a pattern, be sure to align it properly when cutting subsequent strips.

4. Create a Guideline

Before applying, use a level and pencil to draw a straight vertical line where you'll place your first strip. This step will ensure your wallpaper is straight.

5. Start Applying

Now, peel back about 12 inches of the backing from the top of your first strip. Then, line up the top edge with the ceiling and the side with your vertical guideline. Finally, press the exposed adhesive onto the wall.

6. Smooth and Stick

As you continue, pull down more of the backing and smooth the wallpaper onto the wall using your smoothing tool. Work from the center outwards to remove any air bubbles.

7. Trim Excess

Once you reach the bottom, use your utility knife to carefully trim any excess wallpaper at the baseboards and around outlets or switches.

8. Repeat the Process

Subsequently, continue applying strips, making sure to match patterns if necessary. Moreover, slightly overlap the edges of each strip for a seamless look.

9. Finishing Touches

Lastly, once all strips are applied, go over the entire surface again with your smoothing tool to ensure good adhesion and remove any remaining air bubbles.

Tips for Success:

  • Above all, work slowly and carefully to avoid creases or bubbles
  • If you make a mistake, gently peel the paper back and reposition
  • For intricate areas like around windows, cut the paper slightly larger and trim after application
  • Furthermore, use a hair dryer on low heat to slightly warm the adhesive if you need to reposition a stubborn section

With these steps and tips, you'll be able to transform your space with peel and stick wallpaper. Happy decorating!
